Chinese Language in Culture: Level 1

Learn both cultural competence and language proficiency for successful participation in Mandarin-speaking societies.

This subject is the first of a series that forms an introduction to modern standard Chinese, commonly called Mandarin, the language with the largest number of native speakers in the world. The course presupposes no prior background in the language. Course objectives are to master Mandarin pronunciation, including the recognition and writing of Pinyin romanization, basic reading and writing skills, and to develop the ability to participate in simple, practical conversations on everyday topics. The relationship between Chinese language and culture and the sociolinguistic ally appropriate use of language will be stressed throughout. Typical lesson format will include a core conversation, vocabulary, sentence patterns, cultural notes, pattern review, quizzes, reading and various types of exercises.

Coursera Start from Scratch

This is a six-week introductory course in Mandarin Chinese conversation. The course will be taught completely in Mandarin, however students are not expected to have any experience learning Chinese.

This course’s main objective is to study practical conversation. By watching videos showing various kinds of situations, learners will recognize and understand vocabulary, pair everyday words together with grammar to form short phrases, and learn the correct way to express words used in day-to-day life.

FLTA Story Book Series

21 Fulbright Foreign Language Teaching Assistant (FLTA) grantees collaborated with Professor Hui-Chen Hsiao from NTNU, Ministry of Education, and Fulbright Taiwan and published “FLTA Storybook Series” this summer that consists of 12 picture books.

Mia Fulbright, the main character of the whole series, came to Taiwan for a year-long exchange. Following her journey, the reader will explore 12 Taiwan-related themes, including: Taking Hot Spring Baths on Cold Days (January), Worshiping the Chinese God of Love (February), Going to the Night Market (March), Weddings (April), Prides (May), Tea-Picking Fun (June), Traveling around the Island (July), The Fun of Kenting (August), Sky Lanterns (September), Food Frenzy (October), Tangyuan (November), and Celebrating New Year (December). Conversation, common expression, practical usage, and cultural tips were also included. The series will be a useful cultural teaching material for Mandarin Chinese teachers as well as must-have picture books for Mandarin Chinese learners to their cultural literacy and a deeper understanding of Taiwan.
